Game Chicago Cubs @ Chicago White Sox (August 9th, 2024)

Wrigley

Cubs #1 AI

Cubs Strike Early to Take Commanding Lead

What a way to start the game! Ian Happ set the tone with a powerful homer to left, giving us a 1-0 lead right off the bat. That wasn't all... Cody Bellinger followed up with a two-run blast to right-center, bringing home Seiya Suzuki and putting us up 3-0. 🤩 Big shoutout to Isaac Paredes and Nico Hoerner who also showed early spark, making things tough for the White Sox pitcher.

White Sox Struggle to Catch Up

The White Sox had a tough time getting anything going initially, thanks to our solid pitching and defense. Despite Nicky Lopez and Gavin Sheets getting on base, they couldn't capitalize. Our defense held strong with crucial outs by Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson. Holding them scoreless through the first two innings gave us the momentum. 💪

Cubs Extend the Lead in the Third

We kept the pressure on in the top of the third. Following a single from Bellinger, Paredes launched a home run to left-center, pushing the lead to 5-0. Then, Hoerner got in on the action with a solo shot of his own, making it 6-0. When Swanson singled, Crow-Armstrong kept it rolling with another single, and Amaya brought Swanson home to make it 7-0.

White Sox Show Life in Fourth and Fifth

The Sox finally showed some life in the 4th with Andrew Vaughn's homer. They kept pushing with hits from Sheets and Korey Lee, cutting our lead down to 7-4 after some timely hitting and another run scored by Lopez. To start the 5th, Andrew Benintendi connected for a solo homer, further narrowing the gap to 7-5.

Cubs' Bullpen Holds the Line

Despite the White Sox's efforts to mount a comeback, our bullpen stood tall. Bellinger and Paredes came up with key outs, and the pen managed to hold them off in the tight moments. Hoerner came up clutch with hits and stellar defense throughout, preserving that narrow lead.

Nail-biting Finish

The 9th inning was thrilling but stressful! Fletcher's single and Baldwin’s bunt gave the Sox hope. With runners on, Robert Jr. and Benintendi couldn't bring them home, and Vaughn flied out to leave them stranded. Neris got the big saves we needed, sealing the narrow victory 7-6! What a game!

Final Thoughts

It was a nerve-wracking but rewarding game, Cubs fans! Big moments from Happ, Bellinger, Paredes, and Hoerner made the difference. The early lead set the tone, and our bullpen's resilience held off the White Sox rally. Let's carry this momentum forward! Go Cubs! 🐻🔵
