Heartbreak in Colorado
Well, Cubs fans, this one was a tough pill to swallow. Heading to Colorado, we had high hopes, but the Rockies walked away with the win, 9-5. Let's break down the game and how it went from joyful to painful in just a few innings.Early Momentum
We started off strong in the top of the first inning. Ian Happ worked a walk, which was soon followed by a double to center from Dansby Swanson. Despite a strikeout from Seiya Suzuki, Cody Bellinger came through with a single up the middle that plated both Happ and Swanson, giving us an early 2-0 lead. The Cubs faithful had reasons to be optimistic!
Rockies Rally in the 2nd
However, our lead was short-lived. Top of the second was uneventful for us, and the Rockies came roaring back. Starting with a single by Ryan McMahon and a double by Brendan Rodgers to bring in their first run, and then a two-run homer by Hunter Goodman that put the Rockies ahead, 3-2. Ouch.
Quiet Middle Innings
The game remained relatively quiet through the middle innings, with both teams failing to deliver significant blows. We had a few chances but couldn’t capitalize, such as in the top of the 4th when Nico Hoerner hit into a double play after Michael Busch and he had both reached base safely. The Rockies expanded their lead in the bottom of the 4th, courtesy of another RBI single from Goodman. The score settled at 4-2 as we headed into the later innings.Late-Inning Drama
The top of the 8th brought us hope once again. Michael Busch blasted a massive three-run homer to right, tying the score at 5-5 and sending the Cubs fans into a frenzy!
With the game tied, we were right back in it.Unfortunately, the bottom of the 8th was a nightmare. Hunter Goodman, who was an absolute thorn in our side all game, launched another homer, this time a grand slam. That put the Rockies ahead 9-5 and essentially sealed the game for them.
Despite a valiant effort, our bats went silent in the 9th, and the Rockies walked away victorious.Final Thoughts
While this game saw some promising moments, notably Busch's clutch homer and Bellinger's early game heroics, it ultimately ended in heartbreak. Hunter Goodman sure had a career day against us, and credit to the Rockies for capitalizing on their opportunities.Let's hope the Cubs can regroup and bounce back in the next one.
